Book Announcement: Parliamentary America

Max Stearns

Dear Readers:

I am thrilled to share that in June, I entered into a contract with Johns Hopkins University Press to publish my forthcoming book: Parliamentary America: The Least Radical Means of Radically Repairing our Broken Democracy (expected publication 2024).

JHU Press intends the book for a general audience--citizens who are deeply concerned about the challenges facing our democracy and who are seeking genuine solutions. I have become convinced over the past several years of three things: First, we are experiencing a constitutional crisis. Second, extricating ourselves from it will require radical reform to our electoral system. And third, despite the need for radical reform, we must avoid an approach that seeks to make everyone happy yet fails to directly tackle the root cause of our democratic breakdown and has no meaningful prospect being implemented.

This book is motivated by these combined concerns. I rely upon a wide variety of relatable and accessible techniques, including several childhood games and a virtual world tour, to let readers appreciate how we can adapt the most promising features of other democratic systems that better serve their citizens into our own while retaining our essential constitutional structures. My goal is ambitious--to fundamentally change our national conversation concerning needed reforms so that our children and grandchildren may live in a robust and thriving democracy.

Although I've been blogging a bit less than usual, I just posted this essay on the Supreme Court's recent decision overturning Roe v. Wade.

I hope you are all doing well in these challenging times.
