This short post has two links. The first is to the remarkable story by Pulitzer Prize winning author, Alex Tizon, about being raised by Lola, a woman who he rightly describes as his family's slave.
The second is to the backstory about the reporter himself, who died this past March at the age of 57, just before the article that he wrote, came out.
If there is any upside, it is only that Alex Tizon was able to convey this compelling and deeply personal story about such a remarkable woman before he died, even if he, himself, did not get to see the publication. He also did not know that The Atlantic chose the piece as its June cover story, a decision made after his death. I found the article he wrote so gripping that I couldn't put it down once I started. I found the shorter article about the author shortly after that. The cover story article is long, but truly worth your time.
